Damn internet

Hi,

On Wednsday I will have internet access... in theory. But then I need to wait another few days for my modem. So more likely on Monday or so.

Anyhow... One thing I have been longin for is a balcony or some other outdoor space. I have finaly got that, but the view is not very pretty. On an inner city back street facing the airconditioning vents of the hotel across the street. Anyhow, I got some pots and seeds. So now I'm growing Rocket, Basil and Parsley. I hope they will survive. Its not much direct sunlight as the high rise buildings are keeping my appartment in the shades for most of the day.

Yesterday evening i put one of my chairs on the balcony to sit there and do some work. I took this picture using my built in webcam.

The blackest black

Hi, This will be a tricky one as I have so much to write but so little time.
The weekend have been superb. It so much to write about. But I will keep it short and only about Saturday even though the other days where brilliant too. I have so many images and they will all be on flickr eventually. But I have atleast provided some.

I start of with this one. I just love it

Any how... I wanted to do something, and the friends I have got here so far where all going away for the weekend. So I decided to do the same. I heard a lot of good things about the Blue Mountains. I looked it up on the web and found a package with bus to the village of Katoomba to see the spectacular views over the Eucalyptus covered valley and to see the "the three Sisters", (the 3 mountain tops that have quite a spectacular story behind them, but I don't have time to write it down, so if you are curious, go ahead and look it up)
And then further on to the Jenolan limestone caves. I went for the "Extended full tour of the caves where kids under 10 whereat allowed". I thought... "Great, If I'm going there, I want to see it all and I cant be bothered with kids". The bus left 8.15 on Saturday morning. When on the bus we had 2 hours ahead of us to our first stop. The first thing the driver says is "All of you have booked the standard tour of the caves, apart from one person. He has to get ready to wear a hard hat, overall and ropes. And be prepared to get really dirty. He is going down what is named the PLUG HOLE. This was not what it said on the package. I got really worried what I got my self into. And the plug hole sounds pretty nasty (in more ways than one). For you who don't know. I have a great fear of just thinking about getting stuck in a narrow space in a cave. Especially after watching the film The Decent (one of the scariest movies I have ever seen). When we eventually got to our first destination we have about an hour to do what ever we like. But the bus driver says "Every one can wander off and do what ever they like, but I need to have a word with the guy who booked the adventure tour. I need to prepare him for a few things. I seriously thought I was going to freak out. He said I had to get something to eat here in Kotoomba as I would have no time when at the caves. My tour was going to be 2 hours in the caves and I needed to get "kitted up" as soon as I got there. I told the driver that if I'm likely to crawl around in really tight spaces where I could get the feeling of being stuck, I wont do it, then I rather go on the ordinary tour. We decided to talk to the guides as soon as we got there.
While in Katoomba, the weather was quite bad. But I decided to take a trip down to the valley with the worlds steepest train, (53 degrees or something). When I got down under the clouds everything was clear. In the valley there was a rain forest. It felt like being in a Jurrasic park setting. Apart from the valley it self the place was quite exploited to suit touristing families and bus groups, which I didn't like very much. I bought my self a sandwich and got back on the bus after about an hour. We had another 1,5 hour ride in front of us before we reached the caves. Wehn we finally got there the driver asked me if I was going to do it or not. Well, I didn't really think, I said yes. I joined a group of 8 other people to go on the tour. We where all dressed up in blue overalls, with mining lights, and ropes and stuff. We headed further up where we had to vinch our selves in a hole. Then the cave adventures started... full on. We started climbing through these limestone caves with stalagtites hanging down from the ceiling. We got to crawl through very narrow spaces and little holes. At one stage we had to sit down in a big cave room and turn our lights out. That was the darkest dark I have ever experienced. Sorry for sqeezing everything in to a few sentences, there is so much to say. Just a few notes. As soon as I acutally went of the bus I wasn't scared. The guides where phenomenal. And I was never ever, at any stage scared while in the cave. When looking at the photos, I cant believe I actually did it. If I would have seen the before hand I would never have done it. I felt like a hero when we finally came out on the other side. I would love to tell you all the details, and hope to do so some day.
This is the best adventure so far. These are the kind of things that will make me earn my mustache.

Short Post @ home

Sorry, I haven't posted anything in quite a while. I have been here for 4 weeks now, and it has been very intense so far. It's exciting and there is so much to explore. I have orderd interet for home, but it will take another week or 3 till i'm hooked up. So I'm posting this from work. I have prommised to supply some pictures of my new apartment. And here is a few. Its very tricky to photograph interior without a wide angle lens. But these will have to do for now.
(By the way, the chairs are not the expensive originals, but nice replicas I found in a second hand shop)

FLAT LAND

A few days of area recognition and flat hunting has passed since I wrote my last post. It was a little depressing the first few days, as none of the flats felt like I would even consider living there, hence the price, they where all in very run down states, with a nasty looking area around them. Bad chilly weather with quite a lot of rain just added to the atmosphere. I was really tired and had a very sore shoulder on Friday afternoon after walking for days carrying my shoulder bag containing map book etc. So I went home to watch the last half of “Boys don’t cry” together with Soraya and just rest for a little while. I don’t think there was a single happy moment in that film, it made me all moody.
It’s not only the Flat hunting causing problems. Work wise as well. I knew when I left I didn’t have anything 100% settled which was a bit of a risk. The plan was to work for Frost, and I will do so, at least on Monday as they need me urgently. The person I need to speak to has been on holiday and will be back on Monday. I will have a meeting with her in the afternoon. I know they are interested in having me for longer, and they are having a hard time finding someone. The two biggest issues are that Frost is having a policy of liability insurance for freelancers working inhouse. This costs about 5000 AUD which is about 30.000 kronor or 2300 pounds. They are going to ignore that for Monday, but for the future, they are either paying it for me or come up with an idea on how to work around this problem. I’m not the least interested in taking this cost. And we also have to agree on a rate, all depending on the length of project etc. I hope this will all be settled on Monday. Ok, so after all these worries, Friday afternoon felt, as I said. Some what moody. This was soon to be changed, We had booked tickets for Grieg’s piano concierto at the Sydney Opera house later that evening. We had an early dinner at a nice Italia place before the show started. We met up with a few of Jakobes colegues and their partners when we finally arrived. The building it self was absolutely stunning. It’s not justified on the photographs, it must be experienced. And the concert it self was wonderful. It was the very first time I ever went to a classical concert, and I must admit I enjoyed ever minute of it. The main act was a Venezuelan piano prodigy accompanied with a big symphonic orchestra. She was amazing. I have never heard anything like it before. When the show was over we all decided to have a few drinks at a bar near by in the harbour. And it turned out that the pianist had decided to go to the same bar so we got the chance to have a chat with her. Jakobs colleagues are really nice people, all of them so far. We didn’t want to leave to late as I had quite a few flat viewings booked in for Saturday.
Saturday was hectic, went out early to view as many flats as I possibly could. Stormy, rainy weather. I was soaking wet and freezing cold after my umbrella was literally blown to pieces. Not a nice day to run around and I didn’t dare have high hopes as the previous flat viewings had been so miserable. I was focusing on a new area. An area called Surrey Hills, and every one I have spoken to have had strong opinions both for and against, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. My verdict is…. I loved it. It was brilliant in my opinion. The area is vibrant with plenty of very nice cafés, restaurants, shops etc. An area where I felt I could be at home. On top of that, several of the flats I visited was not to bad. 4 where I could definitely consider moving in. 3 of the 4 stood out a bit more, and one in particular, I cant get out of my mind. It had almost everything I could whish for. About 5 minute walk into the city centre, Stunning looking flat, with very nice kitchen and bathroom, with washing machine. It also had a balcony.
The drawbacks where, the price and the view from the balcony. Well the view I can live with, price feels a little more concerning.
The other two had very good features as well, one of them had a huge…. Then I mean huge balcony. It was probably as big as the flat it self. It must have been something like 55 square meters or so. You also had full access to a swimming pool and a gym in the building. The drawbacks where 1. No washing machine, had carpets, (and as people where shoes indoors they where not 100% clean. They where going to clean them before the next tenant would move in, but I’m not sure if it will look very nice anyway). And the price, it was not as bad as the other one, but still not cheap.
The third one was a little bit further away from the city. But still not to bad. Nice space and everything you need in there. Balcony, same as the first one, the views where not great. But otherwise it was not bad at all. You also had access to swimming pool. Compared to the other ones the price was very good. Well its not cheap as living in Kalmar but in comparison.
Any how. To grade the feel I got from the actual flats was. Un beatable winner Flat 1, then Flat 3, and last Flat 2. Flat 1 was by far the most expensive one though. I get that typical Swedish gut feeling “what will people think of me if I get a stunning expensive flat like this”. I know I shouldn’t give a damn if some people would be disturbed by it. And I will force my self not to think so. I have done some calculations and well… yes I can afford it for the 6 month binding period without getting into trouble with the Australian Bailiffs no matter how bad work goes. Well… I could lose a lot of money (So I would for all of the flats though, but this one in particular). I would be taking a big risk. But this is the flat I have had the greatest feeling for by far compared to any of the others I have been looking at. I wont save as much money for my adventures though. Damn, I change my mind every minute when it comes to what I want to/should do. Well, tell me if I’m completely mad if Im going to go for Nr. 1 I admit I am very, very tempted. (I need to work at least an average of 8 days a month to cover the rent)
Well, its not all down to me deciding. My application needs to go through and be accepted and might also be compared to other applications in case someone else is interested. So I cant wait around and think to much. Therefore I whish to send in the application first thing by Monday morning.
In the evening we cooked some lasagna, and just stayed at home, we where all a little tired I guess.
Please see some photographs from Fridays experience. They are all taken by Jakob as I didn’t bring my camera there. I have also provided some photos of flat nr 1, they are from the estate agents website, and does not come with the furniture.

Any how, take care till next time. And please advice me what to do regarding flat my flat options.

THE RESULT OF TODAYS TASK

I have been walking for hours... many, many hours today. Investigating different areas for a possible future home. I dont know where to start this post... maybe I should start this with the worst thing in a long, long time. Something I couldnt really expect, turning my world upside down, and it feels terribly confusing. And its also very bad timing as I'm doing my best to settle in on a new continent and I dont need no more worries. Its as bad as when I found out that Bo G. Eriksson is actually E-types dad. Its just not on... it's just not meant to be like that. Today I received an email from my old boss. Most of you have heard of him, the man with the big mustache. He wrote the following sentence:

"Vad beträffar min eller mina morrhår så röök de i juli efter 40 år i ansiktet enligt expertis så blev jag 12 år yngre ok lite förändring om inte väldigt ovant."

For you who dont speak Swedish. To cut it short.... The whiskers are gone! he shaved them all off. What shall we do? 4 days of sorrow and silence?

Anyhow, most of you probably don't give a damn about one mustache more or less, so I will continue the blog talking abit more about my Australian experience instead.

So... I have been here for 2 days + one evening. It feels a lot longer though as I have been looking around so many places , organizing things etc. It still feels very unreal. Everything is new and there is a lot to explore. I remember the feeling from when I first came to London. I cant tell if its good or not. I guess It will take a few weeks at least before I will settle in properly and will be able to judge.

The city center looks very big with all its sky scrapers but feels quite small when you walk around. Its very very clean and tidy in the CBD (thats what the city center is called). The darling harbor looks very very pretty, especially in the evenings. Lines of palm trees, the boats and the buzz from the surrounding restaurants and bars. The stunning opera house, in reallity its far superior all the pictures you have ever seen of it. The botanical garden is massive and absolutely beautiful, I reckon that many of my summer days will be spent there.
The food has been excellent so far. Most of the migrants are asian. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai. So if those kinds of cuisines rocks you boat... then you will be safe for sure.
Not only that. The supermarkets have quite a few exotic fruit and veggies I have never seen before. But I will take all my chances to eat them as soon as I find out how to cook them.
One thing I have been missing when I have been zooming around is that certain atmosphere. It feels it lacks a bit of character. Maybe its because the city is far to young to have such features. Or it might be because I have only been here for 2 days and could impossibly have dug out those hidden gems yet. I think time can only tell.

I visited the beach for the first time today. The famous Bondi beach with all its surfers. I didnt go there to swim, and I'm very glad I didnt, because the weather had turned bad as soon as I arrived. And as the spring is only a few days old (officially started on Monday) it turns fairly cold as soon as the sun is not shining. Even though there was a few brave surfers out there. But it looked extremly freezing. Its strange, the contrast between hot and cold is very sharp. When the sun is shining it becomes very hot very quickly.

Any how, as I have looked around quite a bit now, I think I know what area of town I will go for. So I will try to hook up with som estate agents tomorrow.

Here are 2 pictures from todays event.

Speak soon, bye!
